“Come on Isabel, we better go,” I say to her while we made our way back to the food dealer’s kiosk.  Thankfully it took the rest of the hour for the crowd to disperse after the Deputy-Director’s speech. We both made it back to the dealer as he gives us our order of blood packets. “O+ is all they had. I hope that’s all right with you Isabel,” I said to her. “I love it! O+ is my favorite type of blood!” she jumped in a festive mood. I continued through darkness of the alleyway as Kim rested comfortably in both my arms.
I then saw the police lights flickering at the end of the alley leading to the streets.
Kim held on to me tighter as she grew nervous over whatever was on the other side waiting for us.
I comforted her by saying,

“It’s alright Kim. Just stay calm, ok.”

She nodded her head in agreement and continued to stay silent.
We both made it out of the darkness, onto the sidewalk, as the only thing I see around me are multiple police cars parked in a barricade formation.

And so I kept my promise to Kim.
I began visiting her at a regular basis.
I go even when my vacation time was over.
Day after day, she knew where to meet me.
Under the tree behind the hospital, as always.

Everyday, she was always anxious to see me again.
And I was anxious to see her as well.
We talked.
We laughed.
We played together.
We shared stories.
Everyday with me made her feel calm and happy.
And everyday with her made me feel like I was… normal.
Looking through the times we spend together, we’re both not so different.
We’re both non-human, both mistreated for what we are and to what we do.
